Exploring Reclamation and Revegetation at PT Berau Coal: Kaltim Provincial Environment Agency’s Visit to Tanjung Redeb
In June, the East Kalimantan Provincial Environment Agency (DLH Pemprov Kaltim) conducted a field visit to PT Berau Coal, a leading coal mining company in Berau Regency. The visit, led by Anwar Sanusi, Head of DLH Kaltim, along with his team and accompanied by the Head of DLHK Berau Regency, drh. Mustakim Suharjana, aimed to monitor and evaluate the company’s reclamation and revegetation activities.
The visit began with a welcome from Jimmi Idris, Acting Head of Mining Engineering at PT Berau Coal, and other company management. They toured the company’s operational areas to observe mining activities and environmental management, including post-mining areas that have been reclaimed and revegetated.
Febriwiadi Djali, General Manager of System Compliance and Environment at PT Berau Coal, reaffirmed the company’s commitment to environmental management in alignment with mining operations. He emphasized that PT Berau Coal not only adheres to government-imposed environmental regulations but is also committed to continuous improvement to exceed existing standards.
One highlighted success in reclamation and revegetation is the Future Development Area, or “Kembang Mapan,” at the Binungan site. This area has been successfully restored into a new ecosystem that supports livestock, fisheries, conservation, and recreational activities, demonstrating PT Berau Coal’s commitment to transforming former mining lands into environmentally, economically, and socially beneficial areas.
Anwar Sanusi, Head of DLH Kaltim, praised PT Berau Coal’s efforts in environmental management and reclamation processes. He noted that the effective management of topsoil by the company is a crucial first step in the reclamation and revegetation process, where the topsoil is reused to plant new vegetation.
Anwar also observed the recovering biodiversity in the reclaimed areas of PT Berau Coal, noting the growth of healthy and large trees. He highlighted the potential for using former mining voids for water tourism and agricultural irrigation in the future, as well as the company’s innovation in processing water from these voids for consumption.
In conclusion, the DLH Pemprov Kaltim visit to PT Berau Coal underscored the importance of balancing industrial activities with environmental conservation. The company’s efforts in maintaining and restoring former mining lands serve as a model for other industries in practicing sustainable and responsible operations.
PT Berau Coal’s commitment to environmental protection in line with applicable regulations is a positive step towards building regional economic sustainability without compromising natural resources and the surrounding environment. It is hoped that such visits inspire other industries to follow suit in maintaining harmony between development and environmental preservation.
Therefore, collaboration among government, industry, and communities remains key to sustaining the environment in East Kalimantan while addressing global challenges in the era of sustainable development.
